Troy Design and Manufacturing is very proud to announce the installation process for a GOM ATOS ScanBox Series 8 that is presently underway at our Sheldon Road Plant.

Troy Design and Manufacturing - GOM ATOS ScanBox Series 8

We are happy to be partnered with Capture3D and the launch of this new technology at Troy Design and Manufacturing Co - Sheldon Road Plant facility, Plymouth Michigan.

With Advanced Engineering options and automotive stamping experience we help you provide feasible solutions before the commitment to Tooling program. The ATOS 8360 8-axis kinematic ScanBox enables the measurement of complete car bodies from above, below, from the side, as well as the interior. The duplex scanning operation enables a synchronous and coordinated deployment of (2) robots within (1) measuring cell. This system captures more detail and data is easier to interpret from sheet metal components and/or assemblies with a significantly shorter measurement time compared to traditional coordinate measuring machines.

What is the Scan Box Doing for TDM:

The ScanBox is using state of the art technology to collect data on manufactured parts at an unprecedent level for quality data collection. The Gom 8 - Axis Kinematic concept enables the measurement of complete car bodies and coordinated deployment of two robots in one measuring cell. The 8 Series ScanBox also enables the independent measurements by the same two robots to measure doors, hoods, and fenders on turn tables located on both sides of the cell. This allows TDM to perform full part scan inspection and section measurements for easy root cause analysis on all levels. Once a 3d model is created from the point cloud, the Atos software transforms the points into a polygonal model mesh that consists of millions of highly defined triangles that can be exported and analyzed in several scenarios at TDM. Engineers can import the model into Vis Mockup, Catia or Polyworks. The ScanBox captures the geometry of an entire part, allowing complete sheet metal part/assembly inspection. It measures with subpixel precision using algorithms developed specifically for this purpose and makes it possible to verify complete surface as well as holes, trim, spring-back, flush and gap measurements, to name a few. The Atos software is parametric smart teach software and utilizes a “teaching by doing” concept. Once the first program is developed and proved out, we can easily scan multiple parts and perform inspections. TDM Engineers or customers can go back at any time and perform measurement without having to re-measure and set-up. Also, stable parts such as door, tailgate, and liftgate assemblies, can be measured without complex/costly fixtures. For example, these assemblies can be measured in one gage replacing 6 measuring gages. The Scan department also works closely with the TDM Fixture department to continually create concepts and improve timing on scanning and measurement strategy.

Safety:

The 8360 ScanBox is integrated with six floor sensors as well as light curtains; if someone is in the cell or breaks the light curtain the robots will not move. Our previous scan cell still used a handheld camera for photogrammetry. The operator had to climb a ladder over a series of 60 different camera shots around the part. This presented a risk to the technician. Today the photogrammetry is integrated into the ScanBox in a small device that rests on top of the scan sensor. This eliminates the operator having to use a ladder. Also, the latest Atos 5 blue light sensor removes the need to use magnaflux spray that was previously used on our old white light sensor.
